We’ve recently added Luck O’ the Coins to our roster of slot games at Bodog Casino and it is gaining a big following. This Leprechaun-inspired casino game takes you on a coin-seeking adventure in a magical forest filled with wildflowers, mushrooms and quaint little gnome homes. The graphics are fun and colourful, serving as a complementary backdrop for a dynamic game.
When you launch a session, you’ll instantly appreciate the unique format that leads to a bigger-than-average set of reels. This makes it possible to land up to six matches of game icons with any spin. You’ll also see three jackpots advertised above the reels that range in size from Minor to Major to Grand—they show up in the Hold & Win rounds.
The Hold & Win is a popular slot feature that sees coins (or whatever bonus icon is included in the game) shower down on a special set of reels, letting you rack up bonus payouts as you try to extend the round and maximize your payout. It’s the leprechaun equivalent of finding a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow.
We’ll go into greater detail about the Hold & Win in this Luck O’ the Coins slot review after first explaining the gameplay and design. This one is different from most 5-reel slots, so you’ll benefit from knowing the nuts and bolts. Once you know how the game works, we’ll explain the easiest way to set up an account here and play Luck O’ the Coins with real bets and payouts.
This BetSoft game is set in an emerald green forest in Ireland. The signs of Leprechauns are all over; behind the reels, they’ve bore homes out of tree stumps and into mossy mounds. Overall, the enchanted forest setting is ideal for players who want to channel Irish luck in their casino slot gaming.
The reels are expansive and go beyond the standard three or four rows. The symbols spin on a grid with six reels and five rows, creating 30 landing spots with every spin. As the reels spin, four leaf clovers cascade from overtop of the reels falling beside them for extra luck.
Game symbols are divided in two groups: high and low. The high symbols pay more and include fun themed icons such as a Horse Shoe, a Frothy Beer Stein, a Leprechaun Hat and a Leprechaun Boot. Low symbols are simple card ranks J, Q, K and A. All symbols except for the Horse Shoe need at least three matches to pay; the Horse Shoe pays with two or more matches and is the top-ranking symbol in the game.
To see how much each game symbol pays, punch in your desired bet-per-spin (betting range is $0.48 to $60 per spin) using the + and — toggles at the bottom of the screen. Then pull up the paytable through the game settings (“i” Button). The payouts on the paytable adjust automatically based on the current bet, showing how much you’d win for each game symbol.
In order for the matching symbols to trigger a payout, they need to line up on one of the game’s 66 paylines. These start on the first reel that’s furthest to the left and move right. To see them, scroll down in the settings until you reach Paylines. All 66 are displayed on this page.
Luck O’ the Coins can be accessed on laptop, computer, tablet and smartphone. The screen scales seamlessly to fit any size, making it easy to play from wherever you happen to be. All you need is an internet connection.
Scatters and wilds are included to boost wins and create a more dynamic base game.
The Pot of Gold symbol is a scatter you’ll want to watch for; this can show up on all reels and pays an instant cash prize when you land three or more. The best things about the scatter is that it doesn’t have to line up on paylines to issue the win; they can land anywhere on the reels and trigger their payouts, which get tacked on to the overall payline wins.
On a $3 bet, three scatters landing anywhere on the reels pay $18, four pay $48, five pay $78 and six pay $198.
The Four Leaf Clover is a wild symbol that takes the shape of any regular game symbol (not including scatters or bonuses) to help complete a winning line. For example, if you have J’s on a payline except for one gap, the wild will become a J to complete the win. It’s a big benefit to the base game, especially since it can appear on all six lines.
Luck O’ the Coins has a Hold & Win bonus feature that is worth trying to trigger—even if you have to use the Buy feature, which we’ll get to shortly. To trigger it in the base game, you need six or more Coin symbols to land anywhere on the reels. The Coin symbols are gold and show various dollar amounts that reflect the bet size.
The Hold & Win bonus is a series of re-spins on a special set of reels. When you land the six Coin symbols to trigger it, the Coins lock into place and trigger three re-spins, all the while staying in place for the duration of the free spins session. Any new Coin symbols that land also lock into place and add three more re-spins to the tally. This feature keeps on refreshing itself until you run out of re-spins completely or get to the point where 30 Coin symbols are locked in place on the reels.
At the end of the round, you get to collect all of the coin values on the reels. Prizes start at $1.5 and go up to $30 on a $3 bet and scale up and down according to other bet sizes. Some extra prizes include coins with Minor, Major and Grand displayed on them; these award a small payout ($48 on a $3 bet), medium payout ($498 on a $3 bet) and big payout ($1,998 on a $3 bet)—far more than the simple Coin values.
Another feature included in the Hold & Spin is the Leprechaun symbol acting as a multiplier; for any spin, he could land on the reels and boost between two to eight Coin symbols with a multiplier that could be anywhere from 2X to 256X. To keep things moving in this direction, after the multiplier is applied, the coin values could get bigger than the max and even transform into the aforementioned Minor, Major and Grand symbols. Keep your fingers crossed for the Leprechaun because he really is a bringer of good luck.
Hold & Win can be triggered during regular gameplay by landing six or more Coin symbols on the reels, but you can also get instant access through the game’s Buy Bonus feature. If you’re betting $3 per round, you’d pay $90 for one re-spin, $135 for two re-spins and $180 for three re-spins, or $210 for three re-spins with a guaranteed Leprechaun sighting. No need to loiter around rainbows.
